Why did you choose to study at the ΒιΆΉ΄«Γ½ΝΕΆΣ (UC)?

β€œAfter comparing various overseas universities online, I decided to study at UC primarily because I found a project that I was truly passionate about. My field is mechanical engineering, which is one of UC’s strongest programs. The university’s academic reputation and world ranking were also key factors in my decision.”

How has your experience at UC been so far?

β€œI first learned about UC by checking its global ranking and reading the university's profile online. I also came across more information through Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book), a popular social media platform for Chinese people. This led me to explore my area of interest further and get in touch with potential supervisors at UC.”

What do you like most about UC?

β€œWhat impresses me most is the level of involvement by all the lecturers in the Mechanical Engineering department. It’s not just one supervisor guiding you; the entire team is engaged. For example, when you start a small project, more lecturers join in to help as it progresses. Even if my supervisor is unavailable, there’s always someone else ready to assist with lab work or answer questions.”

What makes the education at UC unique?

β€œUC stands out for being active, enthusiastic, and patient in its approach. I’m the only Chinese student on my team, and I’ve been deeply touched by the passion of the staff. As my supervisor said, β€œEnjoy your researchβ€”if you’re not happy, then it’s not worth doing.” While I had various reasons for pursuing a PhD, this project has become something I’m truly committed to.”

How do you find the academic staff at UC?

β€œThe staff at UC are incredibly supportive and encouraging. Whenever students work on a project, everyoneβ€”from current staff to retired expertsβ€”offers helpful advice and solutions. There’s a real sense of collaboration, with even retired staff members sharing their expertise.”

What do you enjoy most about your studies at UC?

β€œI love the balance between study and life at UC. There are many events and activities designed specifically for students, and the university is very focused on mental health and well-being. As an international student, I’ve felt very comfortable hereβ€”studying at UC has far exceeded my expectations.”

How was your transition to UC?

β€œOriginally, I was awarded a Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC) scholarship to study at a European university, but later I transferred my enrolment to UC. It was a smooth transition, and I’ve been very happy with my decision.”

What support does the Graduate School offer international students?

β€œThe Graduate School at UC is always there to support students through their academic milestones. They also organize helpful workshops, particularly for international students. I find the regular meetings with Kaitoko every six months to be especially beneficial.”
