Music Theory 2 is a self-paced course that continues The Best Music Theory Course sequence through 11 hours and 57 minutes of video lessons, The Best Music Theory Workbook for Beginners 2, and listening and clapping examples. It covers eighth notes, dotted and double-dotted rhythms, pickup measures, and repeat structures; dynamics and articulation; the bass clef and grand staff; interval inversion and consonance and dissonance; pentatonic, harmonic minor, and melodic minor scales; power chords, diminished and augmented triads, inversions, and seventh chords; the analysis of lyrics, song form, and dominant–tonic tension; and how to write songs and instrumental compositions, closing with analyses of ten traditional and popular songs.
Participants complete the workbook pages assigned in the lessons and fifteen unit quizzes. Credit options range from 1 unit of GLEC for the lessons and quizzes up to 7 units with a portfolio of original work (up to 9 minutes of finished music): a piano composition, two original songs in contrasting forms, a minor-key instrumental piece, and a three-piece game soundtrack suite, each notated, exported or recorded as audio, and analyzed by the participant.
To earn GLEC or CEUs, every participant completes all seven sessions, scores at least 70% on each unit quiz, and submits every project in their credit option. GLEC participants then receive a letter grade: in the 1-unit option the grade is the quiz average; in every other option the quizzes count for 20% and the projects share the other 80% in proportion to their length. Each project is scored with a four-part rubric: accurate notation; rhythm and form; melody and harmony; and the written analysis. Letter grades: A 90–100%, B 80–89%, C 70–79%, D 60–69%, F below 60%. CEU participants who meet these requirements receive their CEUs.
