Credit Validation for Slingerland Participants Only

This course covers a four-week or six-week period of intensive study. It offers training etiology and diagnosis of specific language disability (dyslexia) and provides training in the techniques designed for a preventive and/or remedial program for classroom use. These techniques were developed by Beth H. Slingerland as an adaptation of the multisensory approach originated by Dr. Samuel T. Orton and Anna Gillingham. They are based on upon sound neurological principles of learning. These techniques give the child tools needed to function successfully in all areas of language arts, whether reading, writing, spelling or speaking. Course objectives:

  • Provide instruction in the foundational steps of handwriting, written language, decoding, and reading comprehension
  • Develop an understanding of the etiology and characteristics of dyslexia
  • Introduce phonic rules and demonstrate their application to both encoding and decoding
  • Build understanding of the neurology of language and strategies for developing oral language skills
  • Present information on the history, philosophy, and current research related to dyslexia
  • Guide participants in understanding how curriculum and classroom organization support an effective language arts program
  • Apply multisensory teaching principles through daily practice and work with children

Instructors: All instructors are certified in the Slingerland Multisensory Structured Language Approach.

Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÍÅ¶Ó – Academic Credit Information

The Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÍÅ¶Ó partners with this program to offer graduate-level academic units/credit. To receive units, participants must first register and complete coursework through the external program provider. 

Courses offered through the Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÍŶÓ's Credit Validation Program are accepted by many school districts and universities throughout the United States. It is the responsibility of the participant to verify district and/or university policies regarding transcript requirements, deadlines, and the applicability of units/credits.

The units provided are graduate-level professional development semester units intended solely for purposes such as salary advancement and credential renewal. These units are not applicable toward a master’s degree or higher degree program at the Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÍŶÓ.

Participants who intend to apply these units toward a degree program at another institution are responsible for confirming that institution’s acceptance of the units prior to enrollment.
