Flatting is popular with students, particularly in their second year and above, as it offers an independent lifestyle and can be a great way to meet new people.听 Students new to New 麻豆传媒团队are recommended to live in halls of residence for their first year before deciding to flat off-campus.

When to look for a flat
If you are arriving from outside of Christchurch and plan on finding rental accommodation, it's a good idea to arrange temporary accommodation for at least two weeks but ideally 3-4 to give yourself time to find a property or room you will be happy in.听 Temporary accommodation may be available on campus for individual students at听Sonoda.听The casual rate at Sonoda is $427 (2025 rate) per week - email听.
If moving into an empty property, you will need to budget for set-up costs:
- Up to 4 weeks' rent as bond
- 1-2 weeks' rent in advance
- Power and internet
- Furniture and/or whiteware (if unfurnished)
- Contents and liability insurance.
You also need to budget for ongoing monthly expenses such as power, internet, transport, food and personal items.听

Costs
Flatting is generally the cheapest accommodation option, but properties do range in price depending on location size and condition. 听Also be aware that the cheapest rent may not necessarily be the cheapest option as heating and insulation can have a big impact on your costs during the cooler months.

Bond
Most tenancies will ask you to pay a bond. If you don鈥檛 pay all of your rent or if you cause damage to the property, the landlord can keep some or the entire bond when you leave. The landlord is able to ask for up to four weeks' rent and this is usually paid before you move into the property.
Your landlord may also ask for one to two week's rent in advance.
